In Season 3, Episode 7 of Ted Lasso, after 2.5 seasons in, Ted has reached some form of enlightenment on how to tackle (pun intended) the game of soccer.
The answer? Total Football.
Here are some great lessons from the episode:
- It’s never too late to try something new
- Switching from their usual 4/4/2 configuration to adopt Total Football so late in the game was foolhardy but there was no good reason not to try
- Do it before you feel ready
- If you wait to be fully ready, you might miss out on a chance to learn more through actual practice
- Even though the greyhounds lost the first game with the new Total Football adoption, they made a breakthrough in the way they assimilated their learning
- Give it a good shot before you ditch it
- In the first game when it looked like the adoption was a total failure, the other coaches suggested switching back to the old configuration
- Thankfully, they stuck with Total Football
- Even if people turn to you for answers, you don’t have to be the one to give it. You can shine the light on someone who has done the field work (pun intended)
- Jamie’s locker room talk of “Go thru “meh” not to “meh” showed that he comprehended the theory of the strategy
- Failure is what you deem it to be
- Even though they lost the match, they felt optimistic that this adoption is the right way forward
