I’ve always enjoyed award show monologues.

The most memorable was by Billy Crystal at the 1997 Academy Awards, it was a good combo of smart jokes and a witty musical medley.

Billy Crystal could be on Broadway with his ever articulate singing voice.

After watching Nikki’s amazing set at the Golden Globe ceremony, I read up about what the public and critics thought and went down the wormhole of Nikki Glaser’s past roasts and stand up comedy acts.

In the post award show podcasts she did with Howard Stern and Conan O’ Brien, she was very transparent about the preparation process, the mood of the room during her set and her strong work ethic shone through.

What we can all learn from Nikki Glaser:

  1. Nikki Glaser is a true professional

Once she was assigned the job, she organized a team of writers to help her brainstorm and write jokes.

She prepped thoroughly and was intensely meticulous about word choice, sentence arrangement and tone.

  1. Nikki Glaser understands that this is an opportunity that she should not take lightly

She had the humility to admit that she got this high profile hosting gig because of her recent success at the Roast of Tom Brady.

  1. Nikki Glaser plays the long game

Having found out that she was paid less than a male counterpart for the same gig, she took it in her stride and said that this is her first time hosting the Globes and she can and will negotiate better the next time she hosts.

  1. Nikki Glaser’s avoidance of regret drives her towards success

In the podcasts, she mentioned that when she messes up a joke line, the mistake would haunt her. In turn, she gives every gig her all to avoid the feelings of regret.

These mistakes I speak about are as minor and subtle as using the word “after” instead of “when”. In Nikki’s own words, they both work, but one of them would make the joke that much funnier.

  1. Nikki Glaser is fearless

She has been doing stand up comedy since she was 18 years old and being a female in the often obscene and gritty world of American stand up comedy requires a ton of courage.

She uses her own life as material, making fun of herself and has grown such thick skin after doing multiple roasts.

This is a nod to Nikki who is a self-declared Swiftie.

  1. Nikki Glaser slays the High Stakes

From where I’m looking, Nikki Glaser looked determined to have a good time hosting and it shows. That is commendable given that she is the first female solo host of the Golden Globes and that she will be doing her set in front of a crowd she isn’t used to. if she felt nerves, they definitely didn’t show.

My theory is that her years of honing her craft has come in handy and doing stand up in front of tough crowds has made her so resilient.

I do believe that her excessive preparation had made her supremely ready and confident, thereby allowing her to enjoy her big night.

Congrats Nikki Glaser! You are awesome!
